Nauticus, the maritime discovery center on Norfolk’s waterfront, recently received a $100,000 donation from T. Parker Host in support of its “Reimagine Nauticus” renovation project. This substantial contribution will advance Nauticus’ goal of revitalizing its exhibits and educational offerings, marking the first major upgrade since the museum’s opening in 1994.

The renovation project will introduce five large-scale, interactive exhibit galleries, set to open by the end of 2024. T. Parker Host’s donation will highlight the critical role that coal, dubbed “black gold,” has played in shaping Norfolk’s maritime economy. The exhibit will highlight coal’s economic impact, historical significance and career opportunities it has created in the ports of Hampton Roads. It will feature an interpretive panel and offer educator-led programs focusing on coal, integrating this theme into the broader narrative of maritime commerce and innovation to provide visitors a comprehensive understanding of Norfolk’s economic development.

Hampton Roads is a critical hub for coal exports, with 42% of the nation’s coal passing through the region. Norfolk Southern’s Pier 6 at nearby Lambert’s Point, the largest and most efficient coal-loading terminal in the Western Hemisphere, blends metallurgical coal from mines in Appalachia to meet the needs of steelmakers worldwide. This facility is essential for global steel production. Since its founding in 1962, Pier 6 has exported enough coal to fill a train halfway to the moon.

“T. Parker Host is a proud champion of Nauticus, and we appreciate the immersive learning experiences they provide for younger generations,” said T. Parker Host President and CEO Adam Anderson. “We are thrilled to contribute to an initiative that will both honor and educate visitors about this crucial part of our maritime economy.”

The Reimagine Nauticus campaign, which aims to raise $21.5 million, has already secured nearly 99% of its goal, thanks to significant donations from business and community leaders like T. Parker Host.

“We are deeply grateful to T. Parker Host for their generosity and support,” said Nauticus President and CEO Stephen Kirkland. “Their donation not only advances our renovation efforts but also allows us to underscore the indispensable role of coal in Norfolk’s maritime history and economy — an often overlooked yet vital part of our story.”

The renovation project is on track for completion by November 2024, ensuring Nauticus continues to serve as a leading center for maritime discovery and innovation, attracting over 370,000 visitors annually. Nauticus will remain open throughout the renovation process.
