Walter Energy has appointed Walter J. Scheller III president and COO of its Jim Walter Resources subsidiary. Scheller replaces George R. Richmond, who intends to retire.
Daniel J. Geiger, chairman and CEO, Lexington Coal Co., has retired. Curtis W. Weittenhiller, who has served as Lexington Coal’s senior vice president of operations since 2004, will replace Geiger as president and CEO. He will also become a member of the board of directors.

Thorp Reed & Armstrong, LLP partner David G. Ries was recently honored at the 31st Annual Institute of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF) with the John L. McClaugherty Award for distinguished service to the legal profession, the natural resources industry, and the EMLF.
Jeff Clark, a veteran miner at KenAmerican Resources took first place in the pre-shift contest at the Western Kentucky Safety Days Contest in Madisonville. This is the second year in a row Clark has won the Western Kentucky pre-shift contest, and comes just weeks after he earned top honors in the pre-shift competition at the 34th Alabama Mine Rescue Contest. Clark, who has more than 20 years experience in mine safety and emergency rescue, was also the 2007 pre-shift national champion.
Stephen G. Young, long-time vice president of government affairs at CONSOL Energy, recently passed away. Young was a native of Buckhannon and earned a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a law degree from West Virginia University. He also served for three years in the U.S. Navy. In 1974, Young joined Consolidation Coal Co. as director of state government relations after serving for six years as president of the West Virginia Coal Association.
