Spokesman Steve Hawkins said the mines to be closed include Deep Mines 44, 37 and 25. All will be idle by the end of November.
Additionally, 96 job cuts will be made at Deep Mines 41 and 26. Impacted miners’ last day will be November 20, pursuant to a recently issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice, or within two weeks of that date.
All of the mines are located in Dickenson County. Deep Mine 44 began production this year.
Alpha entered its voluntary petition for bankruptcy protection in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Virginia on August 3. The entire process is expected to take about 18 months.
In an interview with local news station WJHL, company CEO Kevin Crutchfield warned that more closures are possible.
