For the week ended February 22, the newest information, the EIA said that U.S. coal production totaled approximately 18.8 million short tons, an estimate 1.9% lower than last week and 3.1% under the production estimate reported in the comparable week of 2013.
Using the Mississippi River as a separation point, the EIA said that eastern coal production was 8.1 million tons while western coalfields operations had a total of 10.7 million tons.
U.S. year-to-date coal production, as of February 22, is 141.8 million tons. That total is 3.1% lower than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2013.
