Spokeswoman Beth Sutton said the cuts were at the Wildcat Hills and Cottage Grove mines, both part of the Arclar complex in Saline and Gallatin counties. The mines will continue to produce at targeted volumes to match its customer demand, she added.
While she did not indicate if the furloughs are considered permanent, she said all impacted workers are being offered severance benefits and Sutton said employment assistance is also being provided.
“The company regrets the negative impact this action will have on affected employees, their families and local communities,” Sutton said.
Late last month, St. Louis-based Peabody announced it was selling off its 5.06% interest in the Prairie State Energy Campus to Wabash Valley Power Association. The move, it said, was part of a larger plan to divest its non-core assets and reshape its portfolio.
