The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is investing $600 million with Indonesia’s state-run electricity utility, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), to help fund a new 2,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant expansion. Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, is already the world’s third-largest coal producer and a major coal consumer. PLN’s plan includes an extension to two new coal-fired units, Java No. 9 and 10, in the Suralaya region, one of the biggest coal complexes in Southeast Asia.
