Chinese coal and lignite imports rose 23% year-over-year to 886,000 metric tons per day (mtpd) in May, as the country continued to stock up ahead of the summer cooling season. Last month, imports were 5% higher than in April and the highest it’s been in four months.
A coal analyst with a trading firm said import economics had proven favorable for Chinese buyers, as reported by Montel. The import total also included April-arrival Australian cargoes, which were slow to discharge due to stringent customs restrictions.
