According to Japan Today, the Sapporo District Court ordered the central government to pay between JPY 4.76 million and JPY 9.16 million in damages to each of the 15 plaintiffs. The plaintiffs worked at coal mines in Hokkaido from 1960 to 1986 and contracted pneumoconiosis, a lung disease caused by the inhalation of dust.
