India is contemplating the launch of its eighth round of auctions for commercial coal mines, according to the Times of India, with plans to offer approximately 40 blocks, according to union coal secretary Amrit Lal Meena, who addressed the 10th Asian Mining Congress (AMC) and the International Mining, Equipment, Minerals & Metals Exhibition (IME 2023), which was held concurrently at Eco Park, Kolkata. The Times said Meena also disclosed that union coal minister Pralhad Joshi was expected to make a formal announcement in mid-November. The secretary also said he was expecting no short-term coal shortages. India’s coal production is projected to rise from 892 million metric tons (mt) in 2022 to 1,012 million mt this year.
