Although the economy may be uncertain these days, one thing that isn’t is the Bluefield Coal Show. This year, the show will take place September 14-16, 2011, at the Brushfork Armory-Civic Center in Bluefield, W.Va. The show will feature more than 230 exhibitors showcasing their products and services. During the 2009 event, the show’s organizer, the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce, brought in a new tent that offered better lighting and maneuverability for equipment and attendees. It will be back again this year.
On Wednesday morning, during the Media Appreciation breakfast, Gary White, chairman of the West Virginia Coal Association, will deliver the Keynote Address. The ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opens the show will take place afterward. Four speaker seminars will be offered for all attendees beginning Wednesday afternoon.
Coal Age recently contacted several exhibitors in the hopes of getting a sneak peek into their displays. Below is just a sample of what attendees will see while visiting this year’s show.

With torque ratings from 100,000 in-lb to 920,000 in-lb, this reducer is designed for increased power in a compact, economical, heavy-duty package. Using a modular design, Magna-Gear reducers are available for both right angle, and offset parallel mounting configurations. Both solid and hollow shaft units are available. This cast iron reducer features the highest quality, tandem HBNR lip seals with a purgable grease cavity that gives the protection of a conventional tacononite seal without the maintenance concerns. All bearings exceed AGMA standards.
Cincinnati Mine Machinery Co.’s new chain offers several benefits for the mining industry. The combination of an even pitched chain and dual sprockets provides better chain-sprocket interactions, which yields less noise and smother operation. The new chain flight forgings are designed to allow the sprocket to enter a driving pocket and increase strength and rigidity in the flight pin weld joint. The larger chain pin sizes provide more tensile strength, and increases wear life. The new chain incorporates a universal joint to provide increased articulation for chain flexibility.

During the Bluefield Coal Show, Joy will showcase several items. A Joy 14CM15B continuous miner, for use in low to mid-seam mines, will be on display. The 14CM15B operates most effectively between 50- to 70-in. (1.3 m – 1.8 m). Key miner features include SMARTZONE Proximity Detection, Quiet Conveyor, and the soon-to-be released two-way remote control. Sections of the new Joy chain haulage system (CHS) will also be on display. In place of the previous hydraulic drive traction system, the CHS-AC35 chain haulage system uses the Joy OPTIDRIVE AC variable frequency drive (VFD) system, integrating electrical, software, electronic, and mechanical systems to provide a wealth of performance enhancement features. The CHS-AC35 uses the same crawlers, traction gear cases and motors as the Joy 14CM15 continuous miner, providing greater reliability, simplified maintenance and interchangeability of components resulting in less inventory.
The BF-17A Feeder-Breaker that will be on display combines new crawler drive and conveyor drive features with proven designs and components from the Joy continuous miner product line. New features on the feeder-breaker include the crawler chain, crawler idler and OPTIDRIVE VFD.
Also on display will be a 150 hp Combo Drive featuring an inherent hydraulic take up as part of the drive frame allowing quick installation and easy movement throughout the mine. Also featured will be the HD and SDX mine-duty rigid intermediate conveyor structure with troughing idlers supplemented by rubber disc impacts, self–aligning idlers, transition idlers and returns of corresponding sizes in flat and v-return configurations.

Precision Pulley & Idler’s new line of Pro Duty Drums are made with a solid profiled end disc that has the hub machined into it rather than welded in. This eliminates the hub to end disc weld which is responsible for more than 90% of drum pulley failures. In addition, the tapered profile that’s machined into the face of the end disc decreases the high stress areas seen in a welded plate design. This all adds up to a stronger more reliable pulley.
