The services and programs ceasing until further notice include oversight of active coal mines; federal oversight of abandoned mines; federal regulation and inspections of coal mines, primarily in Tennessee and on Indian Lands — except in emergency situations; federal review and issuance of coal mining permits, permit revisions and reviews of mine plans; and access to information provided to states and industry via websites.
OSM services and programs remaining operational will include abandoned mine land emergency declarations requested by states; federal abandoned mine land emergencies; citizen complaints, alleged threat of imminent harm on active coal mine sites; and oversight inspections of active coal mine sites — only in situations of imminent danger to health or safety.
