Vale has set a monthly coal production record at its open cast mine in Moatize, in the western Mozambican province of Tete. Vale-Mozambique Director of Operations Altiberto Brandao said, “In June, we reached a record production of 509,000 metric tons (mt) of coal and we also moved a record 300,000 mt along the Sena railway line.” He added that the company expects to export 3.5 million mt of coal this year, compared with 2.6 million mt in 2012. Vale is the main investor in a 912-km long railway line being built between Moatize and the northern port of Nacala. According to Brandao, 30% of the construction work is completed and the line will be ready by the end of next year.
