Polish Coal Miners to Seek EU Protection

In 2008, Poland became a net importer of coal as plunging global prices impacted negatively on domestic producers’ sales to the energy sector. Domestic production fell by about 7.6% to 78 million metric tons (mt) year-on-year in 2009, while Poland imported roughly 10 million mt of coal.
